Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help keep your chimney flue cleaner and more efficient.

Seasoned Firewood

Using seasoned firewood is essential for maintaining a clean flue. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months, significantly reducing moisture content. Burning wet or green wood results in more smoke and creosote buildup, which can lead to blockages and increase the risk of chimney fires.

To determine if wood is seasoned, look for cracks at the ends and a darker color. Seasoned wood also tends to be lighter in weight compared to green wood. Proper storage away from moisture and covered from rain will help maintain the dryness of the firewood.

Hardwood vs. Softwood

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for firewood as they burn hotter and longer, producing less creosote than softwoods. They provide a steady heat output and require less frequent refueling, making them an efficient option for maintaining a clean chimney.

Softwoods, such as pine or fir, contain more resin and tend to burn faster and cooler, resulting in more smoke and creosote. If using softwood, mix it with hardwood to help balance the combustion process and reduce creosote production.

Storage Tips

Proper storage of firewood is crucial to maintaining its quality. Stack firewood off the ground and cover the top to protect it from rain and snow while leaving the sides exposed for air circulation. This helps ensure the wood continues to dry and reduces the risk of mold and insect infestation.

Avoid storing firewood against your home or within living areas, as this can attract pests and cause moisture-related issues. Instead, choose a location that allows for easy access while keeping the wood dry and ready for use when needed.
